DNC Party Plank – Gay Marriage

Well, this sure isn’t your grandfather’s Democratic party. New reports share that the DNC is preparing to announce “gay marriage” as a party plank for this year’s national convention. This means that redefining marriage will become an officially accepted position and goal for the “new” Democratic party. Politico.com reports: “‘The president’s personal views on marriage equality are known,’ Obama campaign spokeswoman Clo Ewing said, repeating a statement the campaign made last week before the committee met. ‘The president and the party are committed to crafting a platform that reflects the president’s positions and the values of the party.’” I guess the “new” Democratic party now fully embraces and supports redefining marriage and changing thousands of years of established standards in what constitutes marriage and family. Georgia Church Denied Permission to Buy Property

Stories like this are the reason I continue to say pastors should not only be aware of the laws in their state and what the legislation is doing, but they should be the most vocal advocates defending religious freedom. Waiting until it “personally touches” your congregation is the wrong approach that will lead to needless court cases. The New Generation Christian Church in Georgia found out just what this means when they tried to purchase several pieces of property for a permanent meeting place. The county refused saying they needed at least three acres to build. The Alliance Defending Freedom was able to intervene and obtain an injunction which will now allow the church to buy a smaller piece of property and build. ADF lawyer Erik Stanley commented: “Under the city’s rules, only non-religious groups and large, wealthy churches can find an adequate place to meet — and that just doesn’t make sense. This is exactly why federal law protects churches from such arbitrary and subjective zoning decisions. We hope the city will change its zoning regulations and eliminate the need to continue this case.” Click here for original article.

Move Over Chik-Fil-A – Denver Cake Shop Latest Media Sensation

Just a day before national “support Chik-Fil-A day” is set to happen, in which people are pledging to eat at the chicken chain to show support for CEO Dan Cathy’s position on marriage, a Denver Cake Shop is making waves for refusing to create a “masterpiece” for a gay couple’s wedding. KDVR.com is reporting the incident between Masterpiece Cakeshop owner Jack Phillips and a gay couple that asked for a rainbow cake for their “wedding reception.” Phillips told the couple he would not do a cake for them because of his religious beliefs. He said “I’m a follower of Jesus Christ, so you could say this is a religious belief…I believe the Bible teaches that (homosexuality) is not an OK thing.” The men shared some expletives with Phillips before leaving then went to another shop. Can You Fail School for Opposing Homosexuality??

While concerns for free speech abound in the debate over homosexuality here int he U.S., one student in Sweden was given a failing grade for his contention that homosexuality is “abnormal.” LifeSiteNews.com reports: “…a grade 8 student at Nynäshamn Highschool in Stockholm County, Sweden, expressed the opinion that homosexuality was ‘onormalt’ — literally ‘abnormal’ — and, as a result, received a failing grade. When the student questioned the grade, the teacher reportedly replied that it was because of the student’s opinions. The goal of the school’s curriculum, the teacher said, was that students show respect for different sexual orientations, and the student’s views did not correspond with that goal.” Is this the direction we are headed with the invention of “anti-bullying” laws that aim to restrict even personal opinions on the issue of homosexuality? Abortion Views of Young Americans – Might Surprise You!

Abortion infographDespite living under the most pro-abortion president in U.S. history and the Obama administration’s insistence on funding Planned Parenthood with our money, the last two years have seen more pro-life advances than in recent history. And even though Obama continues to give Planned Parenthood larger sums of money, going so far as to ignore state legislatures that defund the corrupt abortion merchant by shelling out tax payer money anyway, I don’t think we are done seeing life laws strengthened, defended, and instituted.

The average person might be under the impression that a majority of Americans favor abortion and believe abortion on demand should be the standard. Nothing could be farther from the truth. While nearly every poll I’ve seen shows that a majority of Americans support life – anywhere from 55%-70% depending on the poll – a new study from Students for Life of America shows just how supportive of life the younger generations really is. The report concludes:

  • 89% favored requiring abortionists to follow the same medical and safety protocols as other surgical clinics
  • 84% favored requiring abortion facilities to warn women of seeking abortions of potential health risks
  • 76% favored allowing pregnant women to view sonograms before undergoing an abortion
  • 74% support making sex-selection abortions illegal in United States
  • 70% agreed with offering a woman the opportunity to anesthetize her child before the abortion procedure

Thank Rep. Rehberg for Principled Leadership in Teen Sexual Health Policy

A bill inserted into the House of Representatives spending bill for the upcoming year makes huge changes to sex education spending. President Obama had reduced abstinence education to a mere $5 million while giving explicit sex education $100 million. The new budget reduces Obama’s destructive education plans to $20 million while bolstering responsible abstinence education to the same amount of $20 million. A news source says the bill “cuts funding for President Obama’s sex education program, which typically promotes the contraceptive-based, explicit ‘safe-sex’ messages for youth. It replaced much of the outdated, failed ‘safe-sex’ message with the Sexual Risk Avoidance (SRA) Abstinence Education approach.” Click here to read original article.

Catholic Family Beats Obama in Abortion Pill Mandate

Last week I told you a little about a Colorado family that was told by the Obama administration to choose their faith or their family owned and operated business. The Newland family owns Hercules Industries and operates the heating and air conditioning unit manufacturing company as a faith based business. In keeping with their faith the Newlands do not offer contraception, sterilization, or abortifacients in their health insurance plans. Now the Obama administration is seeking to force them to offer things that are contrary to their faith or run the risk of going out of business. But a victory was won when a judge issued an injunction which allows the Newlands to continue their business without complying to the HHS insurance mandate. Click here for original article.

You Better Take Attacks on Religious Freedom Seriously

There can be little doubt in anyone’s mind that religious freedom is under attack in America. Even the staunchest liberal must confess that there is a concerted effort to reduce the public nature of faith as it has existed. Where once people’s faith was publicly displayed in any number of ways without incident, it seems increasingly any display whatsoever of faith is being pushed further from the public sector and into the halls of the church.

Phyllis Schlafly speaking to a group at the Heritage Foundation shared her perspective on what she believes Obama is doing to public faith in America:

“He seems to want to get rid of religion in any public place — a public school, or a public institution — and to keep it behind the four walls of your own church.”

Another Striking Example of Just How Far We’ve Fallen

Roll Call – “The Newspaper of Capitol Hill” reported on July 24th that being openly homosexual as a candidate for Congress was no longer a significant obstacle or impediment to conducting a successful campaign or gaining election to office.

That’s about as good a statement of how far our society has fallen as any I have heard.   While my article on Wednesday pointed out a number of examples of the steps we have taken on the slippery slope of acquiescence and apathy, this one was so glaring that it deserved special mention.  It is so pervasive in our society today that the Roll Call article cited the following quote:

That Pesky Stem Cell Debate Seems to be Settled. Guess Who Won?

adult stem cellI’ve long been interested in the stem cell debate. I don’t know if it’s a fascination with the ability to recreate organs and cure diseases or simply my morbid curiosity over the staunch liberal support of the utterly failed embryonic stem cell research. Either way I have done my best to stay apprised of what is happening in this debate as it pertains to my desire to see life defended. After all, one thing is certain, embryonic stem cell research destroys viable human embryos, which is tantamount to murder.

What I never could figure out is why the government would choose to fund something that was a complete failure. Former president George W. Bush refused to force tax payers to fund embryonic stem cell research because it violates the religious and moral convictions of so many pro-life Americans. President Obama has had no such trouble and has funneled millions toward the research.

Government Tells Family Business to Stop Being Catholic

We are bound to hear more stories like this one. A family owned and operated business in Colorado is facing-off with the Obama administration over insurance. Like most Americans with religious convictions the Newland family does not provide sterilization, artificial contraception or abortifacients in keeping with the tenets of their faith. Now they face a decision that many others are facing – to violate their conscience and religious convictions or comply with the government. One report shared: “What we are seeing from the Obama administration today — in its attack on religious liberty — is simply evil. When government seeks to compel individuals to act against their consciences and to engage in activities that, if willfully done, would imperil their immortal souls, there is no other word for it. The Newland family owns and operates Hercules Industries, a Colorado-based corporation that manufactures heating, ventilation and air-conditioning equipment. The Newlands believe the morality the Catholic faith teaches them must animate their lives not only within the walls of the churches they attend, but literally everywhere else, as well — in the way they deal with their families, their neighbors and, yes, their business. The Newlands sued to protect their free exercise of religion in this regard because Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius issued a regulation, under the Obamacare law, that requires virtually all health care plans to cover — without cost-sharing — sterilizations, artificial contraception and abortifacients.” This is not just a bad health-care bill, this is bad policy that seeks to violate the FIrst Amendment rights of millions of Americans.
