I recently wrote about why I no longer support abortion in cases of rape. This is a sensitive subject that many feel passionately about, I get that. Some say “well, you’re a man so you don’t get to have an opinion.” I disagree. I’m a human, conceived and born just like everyone else. For this reason I do get an opinion. And, I would say that a man that recently called in to a radio show to share his story of being conceived in rape certainly gets an opinion. The caller’s story is incredible and lends credibility to two facts: 1. every person, regardless of gender should have an opinion on this issue and, 2. children conceived in rape should be protected and respected like every other child. The caller, Ken, shares details of meeting his birth mother (his birth mom put him up for adoption rather than killing him) and how she got pregnant: “Her story was that she was hit over the head with a baseball bat and was raped at 15. So she went away to Catholic Charities, had me, made the brave decision to keep me — and, well, keep me alive. And then I was adopted and I have three beautiful children now, have been married for 15 years – and I would just like to speak up for those [voice breaks] who have no voice.” You can listen to the phone call with Ken as he shares the details of this story. After listening to his story it becomes obvious that options besides abortion exist for those that are victims of rape; there’ s no need for one tragedy to result in another.
