Campaign hopes to generate more than 2,500 signatures by February 25th.

CHARLESTON, W.Va., – On Wednesday, the Family Policy Council of West Virginia (FPCWV) announced an aggressive campaign to garner 2,500 signatures on a petition asking legislators to let the people vote on the definition of marriage.

“Lawmakers need to understand that their silence on this issue is being understood by those who put them in office as support for the redefinition of marriage,” said Jeremy Dys, president and general counsel of the FPCWV.  “Voters know that there is no legitimate reason not to let the people vote on the definition of marriage.  Now, voters are asking, ‘Does the democratic process apply to all West Virginians or just those who are asking for my vote?’”

The petition notes the nationwide effort to redefine marriage, the silent opposition of lawmakers in West Virginia that prevents citizens from voting, and concludes by saying, “As I head to the polls in 2010, among the qualifications for office I will consider of any candidate –regardless of party – is his or her willingness to let me govern myself by voting for marriage as one man and one woman.”

The FPCWV is partnering with its grassroots allies across the state, as well as its network of churches, to generate 2,500 signatures on the petition prior to February 25th.  Those wishing to add their names to the petition may do so electronically at www.wvformarriage.com/petition.  Signers are encouraged to email the petition to friends or download a hard copy of the petition and share it with others.

The Family Policy Council of West Virginia is a servant organization that advocates for policies that embrace the sanctity of human life, enrich marriage, and safeguard religious freedom.
