Janice Shaw Crouse Debunks “Myths” of Same-Sex Unions

Martinsburg, W.V. – The Beverly LaHaye Institute has an excellent article by Janice Shaw Crouse on the “Five Myths About Same Sex ‘Marriage.’” Though Ms. Crouse does not go into great depth and detail in rebutting these overused excuses for the legitimacy of same-sex unions, her overview of the issues and brief response to each is worth reading. The casual reader will find great interest and material to defend the traditional marriage view.

I would say that it is not too far-fetched to believe that more than just five “myths” exist about same-sex marriage. The more one thinks on this issue the more problems seem to surface. Everything from the mentality behind a position that lacks security and commitment to the obvious health risks are problematic. One issue I can’t overcome is, to put it simply, the plumbing doesn’t fit in homosexual sex. At what point do we say “This doesn’t make any sense.”?

Thankfully Ms. Crouse makes perfect sense in her arguments against the “myths” of same-sex unions. The five myths she tackles are:

Myth #1: Having same-sex couples celebrate their love does nothing to harm anybody else’s marriage or damage the institution of marriage.
Myth #2: Same-sex “marriage” is an “equal rights” issue.
Myth #3: Any group of people — including homosexual couples — can contribute to the well-being of children and form a productive unit of society.
Myth #4: Same-sex “marriage” is a matter of freedom of conscience and freedom of religion.
Myth #5: “Same-Sex Marriages” are just like heterosexual marriages.

Of particular interest, especially in light of the pending fight over marriage redefinition in D.C. is the issue of conscience and religion as it pertains to same-sex unions. Ms. Crouse makes the point that “There is no way to ignore the fact that same-sex ‘marriage’ violates the deeply-held beliefs of millions of Christian, Jewish, and Muslim citizens whose opposition to same-sex ‘marriage’ is founded on central tenets of their faith… More to the point, same-sex ‘marriage’ is already used to bludgeon religious liberties and drive out Christian social services.”

Homosexual activists are not content and will not be content short of a complete acceptance by every person of their lifestyle. It’s not a matter of simply acknowledging them; they seek complete affirmation and acceptance on every level of society and culture. They see any opposition, whether in theology, opinion, public policy or otherwise as an enemy to be destroyed.

This leads me to a question that hits a little closer to home. Why did only a couple of lawmakers – such as Sen. Jeff Kessler (D-Marshall) and Del. Barbara Fleischauer (D-Monongalia) – prevent the entire state of West Virginia from voting on a state constitutional amendment to protect traditional marriage?

After thousands of petitions, thousands of phone calls, and a rally to show support for a bill to allow citizens the right to vote the West Virginia Legislature denied citizens their right.

I echo the conclusion of Ms. Crouse when she asked “Will we protect marriage as the primary institution protecting women and children, or will we surrender to the forces that claim no one has obligations to others and that adults can do anything they want in their sexual lives regardless of how those actions affect society, especially children, and undermine the public good?”
