One Battle at a Time: The War on Abortion

Martinsburg, WV – Sometimes victories are large and everyone for miles knows about them. Other times they are smaller and not as well publicized. Unless you are well connected you might not know of the small victories on the war against abortion taking place across America. Allow me to share some of these victories so you, like I, can be encouraged to continue fighting this war to preserve and protect life.

One of the biggest victories to date comes from Indiana. The state revoked all funding to Planned Parenthood and the new law was signed by Gov. Mitch Daniels. While there is still contention in Indiana, a temporary injunction has halted implementation of the law; there is optimism that the vote of the state legislature will prevail.

In Wisconsin, Gov. Scott Walker signed legislation that redirects at least $1 million in federal and state funding away from Planned Parenthood. Another notable aspect of this victory is that “the state budget contains a provision which puts the University of Wisconsin Health Care Authority (UWHCA) under the provisions of state law, which prohibits the use of state tax dollars for the performance of abortions,” according to a Lifenews.com article.

Wake Up Senator Manchin! You Can’t Stay Ignorant Forever

Joe ManchinMartinsburg, WV – With all due respect to Senator Manchin, this is a load of garbage! As I read through this article and the comments made by Manchin, I found my blood pressure rising as the senator defended his vote to continue giving millions of tax-payer dollars to Planned Parenthood. His comments are nonsense. His comments aren’t logically compatible with the reality true of Planned Parenthood. Here, let me walk you through some of what he said.

“I did everything humanly possible. At the end of the day, I could not in all my good conscious, when I knew not one penny of your taxes was being used at Planned Parenthood to pay for abortions… I couldn’t tell the women who were dependent upon that health care, ‘I’m sorry, I can’t take a chance on giving you your health care.’ I just couldn’t do it.”

First, you didn’t do everything humanly possible. You could have supported the Pence amendment in the budget to remove all tax money from abortion businesses. But you didn’t. Second, only a willingly ignorant person would ever admit where living people can hear that no money is being used for abortions. Oh, let’s be clear, “not one penny” may physically be used to pay for an abortion, but our money is used to subsidize the infrastructure of Planned Parenthood so they are free to use other money to pay for abortion. In other words, our money pays for abortion. Come on Senator, don’t be so naïve, you’re in Washington, it’s time to wake up and join reality.

“Manchin said after his vote for Planned Parenthood funding that he offered the ‘Title X Transparency and Verification Act’ as a ‘lifelong abortion opponent’ to ‘ensure that all West Virginians and all Americans can easily access and independently verify information that not one single federal taxpayer dollar is used to fund abortions in this country. I believe there needs to be a strict firewall around the vital services that Title X funds provide — such as cancer screenings and family planning — so that those federal funds are never, ever used for a single abortion, except in the case of rape, incest and life of the mother.’”

Oh the Irony! Manchin Balks as Other States Move Forward

Say it ain't so, Joe!

Martinsburg, WV –  I can’t help but shake my head as I notice the irony taking place in various states on the issue of abortion; specifically defunding Planned Parenthood. It’s almost a case study in irony as some states move toward defunding Planned Parenthood and further strengthening life laws, while others see how much they can help the corrupt criminal organization.

Consider the Indiana state senate that just recently voted to defund Planned Parenthood. After our federal Senators voted – once again – to continue giving tax money to the nation’s largest abortion merchant the senate in Indiana decided to take matters in their own hands and defund the group. A report out of Indiana says:

“State senators voted to add a measure that was not brought up earlier in the year to a larger pro-life bill that would ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy because unborn children are capable of feeling massive pain at that point in pregnancy. The state Senate voted 36 to 13 to add the de-funding provision to HB 1210, which has the strong support of pro-life groups like Indiana Right to Life and the Indiana Family Institute.”

That is great news. Add to it that North Carolina is now considering defunding Planned Parenthood as well. News out of North Carolina cites the reason for the recent move to defund the abortion business:

“The Raleigh News and Observer newspaper indicates the abortion business receives $473,000 through state family planning programs aimed at reducing teen pregnancies and providing birth control. Although the money can only be used for non-abortion services, the same organization is also the nation’s largest abortion business — doing more than 330,000 annually and comprising more than one-quarter of all abortions in the United States annually.”

In other words, the people of North Carolina are smart enough to know that when Planned Parenthood says “no tax money goes to pay for abortion,” they really mean “tax money helps fund every one of our centers – staff, marketing, equipment etc. – and those things aid our abortion business. Way to go North Carolina, defund.

Then there’s West Virginia. Remember good ole’ “pro-life” Joe Manchin? He wasn’t going to go to Washington and be a rubber stamp or support the things he has never supported as Governor. I guess he forgot all those “campaign promises” once he got to Washington. One of his very first pro-life tests came in the vote to defund Planned Parenthood and he decided it was a good idea to support abortion and continue giving them our tax money.

VIDEO: Abby Johnson Commercial Blasts Planned Parenthood

Martinsburg, WV – Former Planned Parenthood director Abby Johnson has come out swinging in this new commercial against Planned Parenthood. She shares of her experience at a PP clinic, the nation’s largest abortion provider. With all the “facts” and “information” in the news recently on services PP does and does not offer, and what percentage of patients receive abortions, and what tax money is used to pay for; one would think that a former director would know what she is talking about.

Take a look at the video and spread the message of life. Whether we agree on the issue of abortion or not, one thing we can all agree on is that Planned Parenthood needs to be defunded of all federal tax money. No one should have to pay for another person’s abortion. (Click here for commentary)

Urgent: Manchin Fails First Pro Life Test

Martinsburg, WV – Maybe you heard about the vote in both the House of Representatives and the Senate yesterday on pro-life issues. The votes were primarily on the Continuing Resolution that was agreed upon last week in order to avert a government shutdown. But, as part of that agreement abortion issues were debated and voted upon as well.

FAIL: First pro-life test is a failure for Sen. Manchin.

The House of Representatives voted 241-185 (a mostly partisan vote) to defund Planned Parenthood. The measure then went to the Senate where another partisan vote of 58-42 saw the measure defeated. And even though several pro-abortion senators voted to defund Planned Parenthood in the interested of economic intelligence and in listening the desires of the American peoples, sadly, not all followed suit.

In particular it is interesting to note that “pro-life” Senator Joe Manchin voted to support Planned Parenthood and continue funding the abortion industry with our tax money. Less than a year after being elected and proclaiming himself to be pro-life, here, in his first test of moral fortitude and conviction he chooses to support abortion and the corrupt Planned Parenthood organization rather than life.

To be honest, I didn’t have high expectations for Sen. Manchin to begin with. I was of the opinion that once he got to Washington he would fall in line with the other rank and file liberals in further damaging life, marriage, and religious freedom in America. So far he has acted as a good caucus member and done exactly what was expected of him.

One bit of good news from this vote is that the amount of Title X (family planning) funding available was reduced. This might sound like a bad thing at first. But remember that this is the fund Planned Parenthood draws from; which means that the amount available to them will be less. I support whatever gives them less of my money.

Planned Parenthood Caught in Another Lie

Martinsburg, WV – As if all the negative press Planned Parenthood has been receiving isn’t enough, they are trying to lie about their own abortion statistics. Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards has been caught misquoting, deceiving, lying – whatever word you choose – about her organization’s abortion numbers in a recent interview with a Texas publication.

During the interview, when she didn’t really make any reference or comment about the abortion services provided by PP and the fact that they are the largest provider of abortions in the country, she was asked directly about those services. Remember, PP is on the offensive to try and keep from losing nearly $350 million in taxpayer funding that was recently revoked by the House of Representatives.

When Richards was asked about the abortion services she said “We see 3 million patients each year across the country. For 97 percent of them, we provide preventive care. Three percent are abortions. That pretty much holds true from state to state.”

The only problem with her statement is that, according to the PP fact sheet produced by her organization, she’s wrong! And not just wrong in an “oops, I was off by a percent or two,” or “I confused a decimal place.” No, she was wrong by at least 8%!

A rep for Live Action, the group that has made its mission to expose and defund Planned Parenthood, commented on Richards’ error:

“According to Planned Parenthood’s own Fact Sheet, current as of February 2011, Richards’ claim is untrue. Planned Parenthood provided 332,278 abortions in 2009, or in other words, 11% of Planned Parenthood’s three million patients got abortions.”

Of course Richards is making the case that to eliminate the nation’s largest ‘family planning’ provider would be disastrous. However, no one is suggesting that PP close their doors – okay, I am suggesting it, actually hoping for it – instead they are saying that PP continue to offer ‘family planning’ services without tax payer money. Let’s face it, many non-profit groups such as Care Pregnancy Centers offer service without receiving a single dime of Title X or other federal funds. If they can do it, surely PP can do it. Right?

The reality is that Richards and others at PP know that without offering abortions, or receiving federal money they will see such a drop in business and revenue that they will indeed be forced to close many centers. They know, and don’t want anyone else to know, that the majority of their profits come through performing abortions.

The truth is getting out and Cecile Richards and others at Planned Parenthood are scared. They know the tide is turning toward life and that life laws are being strengthened. They are desperate to cling to their blood stained clinics and continue to mislead, deceive, and put women and children in jeopardy with their misinformation and lies.
